7879 Gallery & Clayworks proud to present "Godsmacked Singapore!”, a solo exhibition featuring over a decade-old of works of Teng Jee Hum. This exhibition marks a milestone as it coincides with the 100th anniversary of Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s birth.
As Teng coined it, to be Singaporean is to be godsmacked! There is no precedent, whether you are Chinese, Malay, Indian or Eurasian, with your own entrenched cultural tradition, nothing would have prepared you for the singular phenomenon that has happened in the last half century for Teng, as it has happened to us all, especially for Singapore’s baby-boomers.
Looking at the collection of works featured, it is Teng’s search for identity, discovering the root influences of how he had come to be this way as it is for many of us Singaporeans. In doing so, we cannot avoid the Singapore Story and the one person who has probably done the most for us - Mr LKY.
Teng invented the word Godsmacked because it is the closest word that describes the singular phenomenon that this one person has been to him, to us. This body of works is just the tip of the iceberg collection on LKY, appraised as a desire for remembrance, reflection and rethinking of what LKY could mean for us. Teng has opened up pluralities of narratives infused with symbols with this one person as a singular reference point.
7879 Gallery & Clayworks invites you to come to the gallery in Singapore from September 21 to October 22, 2023, for an immersive experience that commemorates Mr Lee’s centennial birth anniversary.
